Please note that, although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of information printed here, it is the student's responsibility to check with his/her director for any changes in audition requirements or schedules

 ELIGIBILITY:

Students in grades 6 - 8 whose directors are current members of LMEA are eligible to audition. A student auditioning for the District Honor Band must be a member of the school's instrumental music program.  

 

 AUDITION DATES, FEES, AND LOCATIONS:

December 15, 2007

Place: 

William Pitcher Jr. High School

Time:

Individual times, beginning at 9:00, will be assigned after registration deadline.

Fee: 

$5.00 per audition

Students auditioning on more than one instrument must pay the fee for each instrument.

Fees should be paid to the student's school.  A single school check, payable to L.M.E.A. District IX, must be mailed by the deadline to: Dan Eitmann, Northshore High School, 100 Panther Dr., Slidell, LA  70461. 

Registration Form:

Directors should send a copy of the registration form with the fees to Dan Eitmann.

Directors must also email the registration form to Becky Hicks at rebecca.daigrepont@stpsb.org by the deadline so that your students will be scheduled for audition times.

Deadline: 

November 16, 2007

Be aware that schools will be assessed a $50.00 late fee if this deadline is not met. Students who are registered late will be assigned whatever times are still available.

 AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

District Honor Band auditions include scales or rudiments, a prepared etude, and sight reading as described below.

 

 

Note: If you have difficulty opening any scale sheets or mallet exercises, you may need to update to a more current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader by clicking on Adobe link. If the notes do not print properly, you may not have the correct music font installed and will need to download Finale Notepad by clicking on the Finale link. Both downloads are free.

circle07_red.gifScales (30%) - Students are responsible for six major scales in the concert keys of G, C, F, B-flat, E-flat, and A-flat, as well as their chromatic scale.will be played in eighth notes, tongued ascending and slurred descending.  The following chart indicates the number of octaves for each scale. (Click on an instrument for individual scales sheets in PDF format.)

 

Note:  All scales are listed in CONCERT keys except the chromatic scale.
The chromatic scale actually gives the actual starting note.
 


Batter Percussion will be required to play
rudiments instead of scales. All rudiments must be played as "open-closed-open." The required rudiments include the following:

• Single stroke roll
• Double stroke roll
• Five stroke roll
• Paradiddle
• Flam
• Flam tap.
 


Timpani will be required to demonstrate the
proper tuning of two timpani to concert F (low) and concert C (high) using a pitch pipe.

circle07_red.gifSight-Reading (30%) Note that all chair ties are broken by the sight-reading score. All students will be required to sight read a short piece. They are encouraged to practice sight reading in various time signatures and keys and be comfortable with accidentals and a variety of rhythms (including syncopation, triplets, dotted rhythms, and rests).

 SELECTION PROCESS:

The selection process is based on the cumulative scale, etude, and sight-reading score. All chair ties will be broken by the sightreading score.  

 

 AUDITION RESULTS:

Audition results will be posted as soon as available - usually the night of auditions. Click on "Audition Results" in the navagation bar on the left. 

  

 REHEARSAL SCHEDULE:

NOTE: The 2007/08 rehearsal and concert schedules are different as a result of Mardi Gras parade schedules.
